Menard Elementary/Jr. High held their annual Open House on the evening of Tuesday, October 11. The gathering was open to all, and was initiated with a quick PTO meeting honoring the 2022 Menard PTO Lifetime Membership Award recipient, Mrs. Michelle McSherry.
After business was addressed, students, with their guests, were encouraged to tour the campus and show off their workspaces. Different family activities were available in each junior high classroom. Third graders gifted their guests with tickets to their oneday art gallery within Ms. Kris Franke’s classroom.
In addition to the annual event (apart from COVID years), the Texas Education Agency’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mechanics) interactive trailer was on-site for both kids and adults to participate in simple science experiments. The STEM trailer is in high demand across Texas schools, and thanks to the efforts of elementary science teach Wynn Simon, Menard was selected. We will have more on the trailer next week.
Local law enforcement officers and first responders were on hand to greet and visit with students and families. Menard County Sherriff’s Office had some small giveaways and encouraged communication between youth and the officers.
One of the highlights of the event was the group project, where families worked together to budget supplies and build a “house” able to withstand the huffing and puffing of the Big Bad Wolf. The evening was capped with a free chicken spaghetti meal provided by PTO, and prepared by the lunchroom staff.
We will have more coverage of the STEM event and PTO meeting in next week’s
