Gunther Weniger, age 85 of Menard, passed away after a long illness, on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Hendrick Hospital in Brownwood.
He was a resident of Pecan Acres Skilled Nursing Home.
Gunther was born in Goeppingen, Germany in 1938, and attended a local Gymnasium. After spending three years as an intern with a local book dealer he obtained his Book Dealer Certification, specializing in American Literature.
He arrived in San Antonio in April of 1957, staying with his sponsor and learning English. Date of entry to the United States Army was 1962 and he was discharged from the Reserve in 1968. His Unit Designation was Babenhausen where he taught German in the Army Education Center. He became a Naturalized Citizen in 1968.
Gunther graduated from St. Mary's University in 1969, majoring in Economics and International Relations. In 1982, he graduated from the School of Bank Administration, University of Wisconsin.
Gunther retired from United Central Bank, Garland, as Director and COO in charge of operations where he supervised building six branch banks in Texas.
He was active in the Menard Chamber of Commerce, the County Predator Bounty Program, and Wildlife Association.
Gunther bulldozed cedar for improved habitat and loved his dogs, cats, and horse Abby. He introduced friends to his favorite composers and authors including Charles Dickens, Bach, and Dylan. He also enjoyed relating his experiences as a young boy in Germany during World War II.
Gunther is survived by his wife of 53 years, Diane; daughter Diana Watson; three grandchildren- Riley, Linsey and Teddy of Katy, Texas; and stepmother Regina Weniger in Germany.
