This Saturday, June 25, a memorial 5k walk/run will be held in Menard. The race will start at 8:00 a.m. in front of the Menard County Chamber of Commerce at 100 E. San Saba Avenue. The event is in memory of Concho
The event is in memory of Concho County deputies Stephen Jones and Samuel Leonard, who were killed in a shooting incident in Eden on May 10, 2021. The deputies were responding to a loose dog complaint and were fatally shot while confronting an enraged homeowner. The dog was not owned by the shooter, who was reportedly upset the officers were in his yard, trying to catch the dog. A city employee was also injured in the incident.
Each deputy left behind a wife and family. Twenty-six-year-old Deputy Leonard and his wife had one daughter. Deputy Jones, aged 34, was a father of five with his wife. Following the death of the deputies, fundraisers and crowd-funding were held in support of the families, including Menard’s 2021 Memorial 5k. Proceeds of this year’s event will also go to the Leonard and Jones families.
Entry fee for the run/walk is $20 per person or $30 per family. If you have not yet signed up, registration time is 7:00 a.m. until 7:50 a.m., just before the 8:00 race. Pre-registered runners can pick up their numbers then.
Commemorative t-shirts will be free to participants. The shirts are sponsored by Wagner’s Tire & Auto, Roberson Land Co., and Historic 1904. T-shirts are available for purchase that morning, or call the Chamber office at 325-396-2365.
