For many years the Menard Garden Club, led by Diana Trainer, has managed the Hunter’s Dumpsters program through their Beautify Menard fund. With the support of many generous donors, this program provides a place for hunters to dispose of trash through a contract between the county and Republic Services using open top dumpsters. These dumpsters are placed out on the weekends at the airport throughout hunting season with the goal of preventing illegal dumping in Menard County.
In the 2021 hunting season, this program supported the disposal of over 54.4 tons of trash, at a total cost of $28,966.83. During that time frame $19,000 was given to support the program, leaving a shortage of nearly $10,000 in the budget to be absorbed by the county.
For anyone needing trash services, the city dump is open on Fridays and Saturdays, and if you’d like to add a dumpster service to your property Republic Services can be reached at 325.481.7700. John Duke Hudson at 325.226.3035 also does waste removal in Menard County.
Please be aware that any trash left at the airport when the Hunter’s Dumpsters are not present is illegal dumping, and the Sheriff’s Department has issued citations for violations this year. Fraud and abuse of this service also drives up the cost, so if you see or know of anyone fraudulently using the Hunter’s Dumpsters, please report those violations to the Sheriff’s Office.
This program is the only one of its kind in the Concho Valley, and we sincerely thank Diana Trainer and the Menard Garden Club for their hard work organizing and fundraising for this program. We also thank the Menard County Commissioners, and the Road and Bridge Department for providing the labor to manage the dumpsters and trash during the season. We hope to start the program up again next season.
