On July 13, 2021, Menard County Treasurer Ron Wood presented his letter of resignation to the Commissioners Court.
Wood was appointed as treasurer in late March of 2019. His appointment stemmed from former treasurer Robert Bean’s retirement. Bean completed his final term and the seat was open for election. Todd Wenzel was victorious in the election; however, resigned shortly before his term took effect.
The treasurer position then defaulted back to Bean, who agreed to cover for the county until a replacement was arranged.
The Commissioners Court appointed Wood and he took office on March 28, 2019. His resignation letter communicates his reason for leaving is a family relocation out of town. “It has been a real joy to serve the Menard County citizens and Commissioners Court for the past two and one-half years as Menard County Treasurer,” the letter states.
Wood continues: “There is never a good time to resign from a government position that is so essential to efficient and effective management of community resources, but it is absolutely necessary that I take care of family needs at this time.”
Wood’s last day is July 29, 2021. The Commissioners court called a special meeting on Monday, July 19 to accept Wood’s resignation and appoint a replacement. Russell was the court’s unanimous decision to appoint as treasurer.
Tami Russell started at the courthouse as an assistant to Treasurer Robert Bean years ago. From assistant she moved to accounts payable clerk and on to Deputy Treasurer. Now, as appointed treasurer, Russell will complete the 4-year term that expires in 2022. At that point, if she chooses, she must run in the election for the treasurer position.
Russell makes the 4th individual to serve in this one term. “I am looking forward to this challenging role,” said Russell. “I cannot think of a group of people that I would rather serve more than the citizens of Menard. Plus- I like numbers.” Russell’s official first day in office is July 30, 2021.
