Carroll William Looney (91) was born in Hext, Texas, and passed away in Menard, Texas, on May 18, 2023, of age-related health decline. At his side were his daughter Carolyn Looney and niece Barbra Puckett.
Carroll, who many knew as Bub, was a familiar face in Hext and Menard. His love of ranching and his entrepreneurial spirit led him to raise cattle, goats, emus, and llamas. You could often find him fixing tractors, windmills and four wheelers with duct tape and baling wire. Carroll was a sure shot when he spotted a rattlesnake in the lane. His motto was “never take your eyes off a rattlesnake.” He also loved to throw a fishing line in the San Saba River to reel in a catfish for a fish fry. Carroll had a quick wit and was usually a step ahead of everybody to the punch line.
Carroll is survived by two children, Carolyn Looney, and Alton Looney, four grandchildren, Tracy Shamon, Aidan Looney, Ian Looney, and Zachary Looney, five great-grandchildren, along with a large extended family in the surrounding areas. Carroll was preceded in death by his parents Melvin Looney and Mina Goble Looney, wife Mary Omar Looney, son William (Billy) Looney, and sisters Joe Ellen Wiemers and Zelda Henry.
Graveside service was held at 11:00 AM Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at Hext Cemetery in Hext.
