Menard High School students Katelyn Maher and Korah Mayfield will be representing Menard County 4-H at the Texas 4-H State Horse Show in July.
Korah competed at the District 7 show in San Angelo for the first time on Tuesday, June 14. She placed first in her halter class, going on to earn Grand Champion Halter Mare. Korah also competed in the speed events and placed 6th in the stakes race. Her placings qualified her to compete at state in each of those events.
On the other side of the arena, Katelyn will be competing in the Hunter Hack class at State for the first year as well. Hunter hack is a type of English pleasure class where exhibitors in Hunt seat tack and attire perform on the flat at a walk, trot, canter and hand gallop, and then jump two low fences. It is a judged event.
Both Maher and Mayfield are members of Menard’s new 4-H Horse Club. Ms. Kimberley Powell, a junior high teacher and equine enthusiast, was the driving force in getting the program organized and sanctioned. Powell serves as the Horse Club adult leader and is a constant supporter of its members. Menard also had a great representation in the stands of the District 7 4-H horse show supporting our youth. The state show will take place in Bryan, Texas, July 24-29, 2022.
